Diana D’Abruzzo is a full-time freelance copy editor, proofreader, designer, editorial consultant, and writer.

After twenty years in newsrooms along the East Coast—as a reporter, story editor, copy editor, designer, and homepage editor—Diana decided in the fall of 2018 to focus full time on her freelance career. Since then, she has worked regularly with more than a dozen clients, and her assignments have included editing (books, company reports, academic journal submissions, news articles, and more); designing polished, chart-filled reports; consulting on professional website content and design; photo editing for a news agency; creating style guides for organizations; and reporting and writing about social justice issues.

Fun disclaimer: This site is written using Chicago style, but Diana is also well-versed in Associated Press and APA styles!

With two decades of news copyediting experience, Diana not only has solid grammar skills and a deep knowledge of Associated Press style, but she is able to fact-check in a flash. With fifteen years of experience proofreading and copyediting for Penguin-Random House (working on more than 100 books), she also has a firm grasp on the Chicago Manual of Style.

Designing

Diana’s early design experience came from working at daily newspapers, where her job was to create enticing layouts that not only attracted attention and made the audience want to read more but included the right words, the right visuals, and the right fonts to best communicate information. She took that experience and quickly picked up web design at an online publication, where she ran a national homepage for more than three years. In her freelance career, she has designed reports and websites for organizations.

writing

Diana began her career as a reporter and writer and has never given up that passion. She’s merged her love for writing with every job she’s held, even writing photo essays and news quizzes for an online publication while she ran its homepage. More recently, she has been writing social justice articles—including a three-part series on prison reform—for nonprofits.
